It is no secret that all of us must contend with feelings of inadequacy at times. Episodes of self consciousness can take many forms, the most common undoubtedly centered around physical appearance. We as human beings place a lot of stock (oftentimes, far too much) in the way we look, whether consciously or subconsciously. We all probably have at least one part of our body that we would like to change in some way.
Introduce the concept of spot reduction, the idea that specific areas of body fat can be targeted with specific exercises. Unfortunately, despite being perpetuated by the fitness industry for quite some time, this theory has not proved to be true. Chasing after it will lead to disappointment and frustration. As much as we would like them to, sit ups will not target belly fat. Where body fat is deposited is almost solely genetic.
However, there is still good news! While we cannot control where body fat is deposited or burned, we do possess a large degree of agency over the amount we store. Through nutrition and exercise, we can increase muscle mass, decrease body fat, and take control of our health and fitness. If you are struggling with where you are at physically, do not give up. Focus on the factors within your control and stick to the basics; exercise regularly, eat enough protein, and keep calorie intake to a level that is in line with your goals. If you need help, do not hesitate to reach out to a coach.
